Old school B series rebuild - FULL story

Post by BabyNSX » Fri Dec 21, 2018 5:24 pm

Earlier this year I started down the road of rebuilding my aging B18C. The engine had been built in 2007 and with plenty of high strung driving under it I felt it was time to freshen it up again.

Time to get the engine out of there:

Getting the engine out involved dropping the front of the car until the engine sat on the dolly, strapping the engine down, removing engine mounts, lifting the front, and rolling the engine out. Easy

Lets have a look inside:

Cylinder walls showed some wear...

Yikes... look at these pistons - rebuild just in time:

Hey... lets upgrade the suspension while I'm at it:

Might as well clean the engine bay while I can:

My original sleeves have seen enough action... lets do this:

83mm pistons and sleeves installed:

Head was reworked by 4 Piston Racing - combustion chamber looking good - had to open it up a pinch for the pistons

Look at those ports:

And she's back in:

Time for the first round on the Dyno:

Not a bad result from the first day:

Found a problem with my ignition on the Dyno, so I've since upgraded to Coil Pack Ignition and will head to the dyno for round 2. I believe there is some power still left in there 8-)

How is your Skunk 2 Mega Power header, for ground clearance?
Much street (bumps) scraping?

I have a double core radiator with oem header and like the distance that you have between yours.

Clearance isn't too bad... my car has been lowered about 1" over stock and have tapped the header a couple times. It has developed a small smooth flat that does't look that bad or seem to take away from power.

Here's a picture from 2009 when the header was new and just installed on the car:

Here's a video of the car on the dyno ripping to 8900RPM.

Will likely take it a bit higher on the next trip out now that the ignition issues are resolved and we can explore things more completely.

Really cool writeup and project. This is probably a dumb question, but it seems like you know a thing or two about cars, why didn't you rebuild the engine yourself?

Hehe... I've been around a while but am still learning stuffs as time goes on. I also have great respect for those who have skills in areas where I don't. That is why I'd rather have my engine assembled by someone with plenty of experience putting race engines together. It's not a part of the build were I feel I need to develop specific skills.

I have piece of mind that my engine is properly assembled and that with worth a lot to me when things are flying around at 9000+ RPM.

After a second day on the dyno and with some new additions (coil pack retrofit and new 70mm TB) I've got some new numbers:

ImageDay 2 dynorunShare 2 by Baby NSX, on Flickr

about a 9HP gain from the previous day... not bad and I think the engine is delivering the goods now. only a 1.9L engine with modest compression (11.5:1 CR).

Wow! I'm impressed with your numbers, 222/146 will be fun.

What are your first impressions from the coilpacks?
