Re: 2001 GS-R: Engine rebuild, other refreshments
I realized I forgot to put the rear timing cover on. So I took everything off (for the 100th time) and got that on. This time I had this handy cam gear tool to hold the gears in place. Very helpful!
I did the valve adjustment. I feel pretty good about it. Toda specs are 0.2mm for intake and exhaust. I used a feeler gauge, tightened it until there was obviously too much bind on it, then loosened a little for a smooth feeler feel.
Test fit a new OEM ITR valve cover.

Re: 2001 GS-R: Engine rebuild, other refreshments
I decided to put on the valve cover today. Bolted it down. I'm pretty sure my valve adjustment is decent.
Installed a new VTEC solenoid.
I'm also in the process of restoring the front suspension. Gold zinc plating all the nuts and bolts. Gloss black powder coating the suspension pieces. Here you can see the front subframe. I got that back on today.
And yes I realized after the fact that I needed to take off that cross bar thing in order to put the steering rack back in.
I'm looking for a remanufactured steering rack. I think mine is working fine with no leaks. Just want something that will look new and also be OEM.
I want to get the front suspension done and installed. And then put the engine back in.

Just admiring the great photography and wanted to say my favorite thing about the build is the overzealous paint marking on everything
I love the little details.

Re: 2001 GS-R: Engine rebuild, other refreshments
Haha thank you! I try to follow the Honda service manual as close as I can. If it lists a torque spec then I figure why not do it. It's also reassuring to see the paint marks so that I know the bolts are tightened down. And I feel like they would've marked the bolts from the factory. Even though ime dealerships do not mark the bolts. It doesn't take very much extra effort.GeHonda wrote: Fri Feb 21, 2025 2:19 pm Just admiring the great photography and wanted to say my favorite thing about the build is the overzealous paint marking on everythingI love the little details.

Re: 2001 GS-R: Engine rebuild, other refreshments
I got a set of 36mm JDM spindles off eBay (so I can use spoon 36mm axles). Got them powder coated gloss black. Then installed new JDM OEM wheel bearings. And also Spoon ball joints (bump steer kit). Looking good!
Waiting on new OEM JDM brake dust shields then will put on new OEM hubs.
Also installed a few more sensors next to the VTEC solenoid.

Re: 2001 GS-R: Engine rebuild, other refreshments
Working on the intake manifold now. Ordered some new sensors, and studs, etc.
It's a Skunk2 (I know they don't have a good reputation here and I feel the same way b/c of how they treated the previous ITR forum, but there aren't really many options as far as intake manifold and throttle bodies for souped up engines). And it's ported by 4piston, with 74mm TB inlet. And I also got a 74mm Skunk2 TB.

Re: 2001 GS-R: Engine rebuild, other refreshments
Been working on the intake manifold. It's not super clear how to install all the hoses etc. I've gotten all new sensors for throttle body etc. Gonna look for some YT videos for assistance. I have the S2 b series intake manifold that has been ported by 4piston. Hopefully it works on my gs-r, it is supposed to. Not sure about the current location of the throttle cable pulley.
