SAE Battery in JDM Type R (DC2/DB8)

Post by 4DoorITR » Sat Feb 11, 2023 7:54 pm

The JDM DC2/DB8R uses a smaller lightweight battery versus other Integra trim levels in Japan (and global market Integras).
Original JDM R Battery PN: 31500SD5N01
Battery Box: 31521-SD5-010
Conventional (JDM) Battery: 31500SE3043
Conventional (USDM) Battery: 31500-SR1-100M
Conventional Battery Box: 31521-SR3-000
This factory JDM R battery box is shared with the Honda Today and Honda Acty. It is much smaller than the battery box on other Hondas.
You cannot simply throw a USDM battery onto the JDM box as it will not fit. Disconnect the battery connections (10mm on mine) and the battery tie-down (2x10mm). Remove the battery and plastic battery box. Next, remove (3x12mm) bolts holding the actual metal battery tray to the chassis. Two are recessed and one is outboard on the passenger side. Remove the metal battery tray from the vehicle. You will notice a black nub on the metal battery tray. I assume this is here to ensure the correct battery size is installed, but what do I know? Use a pair of pliers to clamp down on the underside of the nub and press it out. Reinstall everything with the larger battery box. Switch over your harness terminals to SAE connectors or simply run an SAE to JIS Pencil Post adapter on your SAE (USDM) battery. One thing to keep in mind is the placement of the +/- terminals on whatever battery you decide to run!
