Question about P73 B20VTEC

Post by AndyD » Wed Jan 05, 2022 11:11 am

Hi all,

I have a question about a B20VTEC build I am considering. I bought a disassembled '97 B18C ITR engine. Previous owner said it was consuming oil for some unknown reason. Asthetically, all of the parts look great. Looks low-mileage.

I strategically bought it to try a B20VTEC build since it is already apart. I am looking to do a pretty basic build. Stock P73 head, intake manifold, cams, etc. Bottomend will be a B20 block with Nippon Racing stock 84mm pistons.

Curious if anyone has this build, and if so, what can I expect? Will peak power be around the same as a stock B18C ITR engine but with a bump in tq?

Any info is greatly appreciated!

Andy

I do.. I am working at the moment but I will give you some info a little later.. you can definitely expect more top end power than a c5 though.

If you plan on using the oem cams then the power will not be much more than a c5. You need cams in this setup bro you will be missing out on a lot of power without them. After swapping from oem itr cams to skunks pro 2 cams on this exact setup I have seen over 20whp gained with all other mods being the same. Of course you will need Springs, retainers, and spring style lma's to handle the cams.

I have built multiple b20 short blocks with Nippon ITR spec pistons and stock pr4 rods with arp rod bolts and revved them to 9200rpm without any issues just be sure to get the rods resized when using arp rod bolts. The oem ITR intake manifold is an amazing piece as well. It will produce more mid-range power than just about any other manifold I've used. Top end may suffer slightly but not much. I've seen up to 8whp gains on the top end using more free flowing intake manifolds but the mid-range always suffers. Mid-range is where is at man you'll be in the lead can't be caught by the time the next guys finally making power on the top side but now he can't catch you cause your mid-range took off on him haha..
You can expect around 200-210whp with the type r cams depending on the dyno and 220-230whp with some high lift cams depending on dyno.
